Culture

The culture of the Ore Mountains has many facets, from schools for bobbin-lace making and wood-carving to passementerie studios, miners’ societies and their miners’ parades, from Erzgebirge clubs to the local dialect cultivated in vernacular theatres and song groups today. The eventful and interesting history of the Erzgebirge highlanders is represented not only in numerous museums; the demonstration mines – often with fine-sounding names – and other relics of mining history also bring people into contact with this heritage. The culture of the Ore Mountains is not divided by rural district borders, rather, the “Kulturraum Erzgebirge” (Erzgebirge cultural region) extending from Stollberg to Olbernhau is defined by a common set of historical and cultural features. The Eduard-von-Winterstein Theatre is the only professional theatre serving the whole region. The Erzgebirge highlanders show their ties to their native region through their membership in numerous associations. |
